The Fertile Ground of Space Holding

There are many tools and techniques that can support transformation. But in my experience—both personal and professional—what truly creates the conditions for deep healing is something much more subtle. It's not a tool. It's not a method. It's a quality of presence.
It's the art of holding space.
In the recent months, as I was completing my certification as a Trauma-Informed Somatic Coach for Women, I kept asking myself: What is it that makes this space feel so deeply healing, safe, and transformative?
It wasn’t just the structure of the sessions or the quality of the content (though those were powerful too).
It was how the space was held.
The way we were listened to.
The way silence was honored.
The way no one rushed to fix or advise.
The way emotions had room to move and breath had room to settle.
It was the felt sense of being received without judgment.
What Does It Mean to Hold Space?
To “hold space” means creating a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental container where someone can show up exactly as they are. It’s not about doing—it’s about being. Being present. Being attuned. Being grounded.
Here’s what that might look like in practice:
– Creating a field of emotional safety where someone feels free to be vulnerable.
– Listening deeply without interrupting, analyzing, or giving advice.
– Witnessing another’s experience with compassion, not fixing.
– Trusting the other person’s timing, process, and inner wisdom.
– Being okay with not knowing or not having answers.
And this isn’t limited to therapy or coaching.
Space holding can happen between friends, in partnerships, in families.
It’s what makes someone feel truly seen.
Why Space Holding Matters
In a world that often rushes to offer solutions, it’s radical to simply be with someone.
To hold space is to believe:
You don’t need to be fixed.
You don’t need to be different.
You’re allowed to feel this.
I’m here with you.
That kind of presence can be the fertile soil where healing takes root.
Where nervous systems exhale.
Where something old begins to soften.
Where something new begins to grow.
Space Holding Is a Practice
It requires self-awareness.
It requires being in touch with our own emotions so we don’t project or override.
It requires humility, deep listening, and trust in the other person’s process.
And yes, we won’t always get it perfect. But when we do, it’s a gift.
A gift of respect.
A gift of safety.
A gift of love.
I believe space holding is not just a therapeutic skill—it’s a human art.
The one which can make our lived experience more profound and our world better…
With warmth,
